The Gnomonic Projection is an azimuthal projection that uses the center of the Earth as a projection point on to the projection plane which forms a tangent to the Earth. This tangent point is at the North Pole in this example. A Great Circles become straight lines on the Gnomonic Projection. Further information can be found on the Gnomonic Projection information page.
